Methionine: This essential amino acid is a powerful antioxidant, and also an excellent source of sulfur. It aids in preventing problems related to hair, nails, and skin. Methionine is basically lipotropic, which means that it helps in breaking down fats in the body. It also aids in detoxifying the body and premature hair loss. Some good food sources are eggs, sesame seed, meat, cereal grains, fish, and Brazil nuts.
Cysteine: This type of amino acid is highly essential for the health of hair. You can include cysteine in your diet to improve hair growth significantly. It also provides sulfur to hair cells to enhance the strength of hair. The amino acid is also known to transport minerals such as zinc and iron to reverse hair loss.
Cystine: This is a non-essential amino acid which makes up about 10 to 4% of the skin and hair. It is formed with the disulfide that holds together two cysteine molecules. It provides additional strength for the hair shafts.
Tyrosine: It is formed in the body from a different type of amino acid, known as phenylalanine. This amino acid develops melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of hair. Some of the good food sources of tyrosine are dairy products, fish, chicken, turkey, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, almonds, lima beans, and soy products.
Taurine: This is an unusual type of amino acid which contains a sulphonate group. It is synthesized from cysteine, and the lack of taurine leads to weak and thinning hair. The dietary sources of taurine include meat and seafood.
